Christmas Presence

'Twas several days before Christmas, when all through the Poplar,

We watched the snow fall (and the weatherman's doppler).

The stockings were hung on the French doors with care,
Before getting shipped to Boise by air.

The table was ready for dinner with friends
Aha!, here they come, just sliding 'round the bends.

I ran to the kitchen to cook up the gnocchi
And we drank schnapps and wine just to get extra joke-y.

Our after-dinner games are known to invoke so much laughter

We'll remember these nights for years and years after.

(stay tuned for more corny Christmas poetry rip-offs!!)

Snow days

When it snows like this, people come out to gawk.

They walk in the middle of the road, because normal cars certainly won't dare to pave the way through a snow tunnel. They say hello as you walk by them, because we're neighbors, and we're in this together. If they decide to say more than "hello," it's usually a joke, like "How's that for a light snow?"

And when your car is buried, they come out again with a shovel, or jumper cables, or maybe even a thermos with warm spirits, all in the name of being neighborly.

As much as I've looked down on snowmobiles for their harm to nature and polluting of the air, I witnessed a sweet moment as I walked out of the Rosauers parking lot: an older woman was standing on the corner with a couple grocery bags, a scarf around her head, boots that went up only to her ankles, her nylon-ed legs and long-ish skirt and long coat surely not providing much warmth. Another woman zipped around the corner on her snowmobile and stopped in front of the older woman and asked if she'd like a ride. The older woman hemmed and hawed for a second as she glanced over this motorized beast, probably imagining what she would look like riding on it, and then figuring that anything would get her home more quickly than walking, she said, "Well, yeah. Okay," and climbed on.

Going to the grocery store suddenly became the thing to do. You would think people were stocking up on water and batteries to weather whatever could come next, but most people I saw were buying brownie mix, beer, and rotisserie chicken. I used this particular trip to the store to buy potatoes to make gnocchi. Because if ever there's something to make when you have oodles of time on your hands to do something tedious, you might as well make 6 1/2-inch wide dough ropes and cut them into inch-long bits to resemble something like tiny pillows.

Did you know I have a patio?

Well, I do. Kinda. It's on the side of my building. I've never used it before this weekend. I was walking out of my garage, saw some tables and chairs on the cobblestone and thought, Why on earth have I never sat out here? It's practically the most perfect spot for a barbecue. I called Crystal and Patrick, and they said, Why yes, it is perfectly lovely. They joined me and my barbecue plot - briquettes, brats and beers in tow.

I'm not sure if Patrick is stretching or flexing for the BBQ here.

Also, the weather was absolutely ideal on this Sunday evening. It was fun to sit and look at the crazy leaves that have been waiting forever to come out. Just look at them. They barely know that spring's been here for almost two months.

These things sizzled to the max.

Crystal, posing with our centerpiece. Lynn, our cottage neighbor, placed it on the table as some sort of peace offering after telling us our music was too loud. She also suggested that we all die before we get old.

Memories of spring...

Remember last week, when it was spring? How I went on a walk downtown on a Saturday morning and heard birds happily chirping, saw some tiny little buds sprouting, and I thought wonderful thoughts filled shades of yellow, lavender, and bright blue? I woke up this Saturday and was ready to take another walk to downtown, since the last one I took was so nice. Well, if I hadn't fully woken up by the time I was heading out the door, you'd better believe I was wide awake after running back upstairs to grab my boots: I understand the occasional snowflake - we'd be foolish to think that a few won't fall every once in awhile until the end of May, but really...

...this???

Okay, let's go to the store

(knock knock knock on Apartment G)
(G door opens)
"Hey Liz, we're going to the store."
"Hooray! Is it my turn to shovel?"*

*dramatization of actual event

But really, in case you haven't heard, people in Spokane are being advised to stay lodged up in their cozy homes while the snow continues to dump. The caution is mostly meant for drivers, but for people like Crystal, Patrick and me, it will not stop us from sliding our little feets down to Rosauers.

Just a few shots from our walk down to the store...
Our House

We're not kidding.

What do you think of that, Patsy?

Keeping with tradition

My Dad instilled in me an appreciation for autumn colors at an early age. Since then, fall has never been complete without an "Autumn Walk" to observe the changing season. The nice thing about these walks is that we never had to go far to find something gorgeous. Usually it was just a walk around the yard.

Living two blocks away from a park, and in a neighborhood with plenty of big, leafy trees, I still don't need to go far.

Even on days like this, when the wind is blustery and the sky is ominous, there are always people walking around the park and Browne's Addition, usually with their dogs. Today I encountered a woman who was taking her two cats for a walk.

So many people develop metaphors regarding life and seasons - being green or in the autumn of their years. May-December romances and younger than springtime. I don't really like that, because it makes the fall seem bittersweet. I, on the other hand, like to think of the autumn as the start of something. This is the time of year when my creative juices really start flowing, my intellect takes over and I want to read a lot of books, then my appetite takes over and I want to bake all afternoon, and then my silliness overcomes me and I post blog entries like this with beautiful photos interspersed with my ramblings.

And then fall is over and it's time for the winter coat and my frozen nose, and all that's left of these beautiful leaves is covered with frost, then snow, then snow mold. Oh Spokane, what are you thinking?

July 14

This was the night I had Kat and James over for dinner, which was followed by a trip to the Elk for a little more food and a little more beer and a little more lettuce collars which were to emulate those foofy collars from England's days of yore.

And here's another update of the wonderful things we have to look forward to. Just go to the nearest casino and you can see these greats. Aye aye aye.

If only there were a June 31...

Life is just a bowl of cherries, so they say. I have been surrounded by fruit all week, so I'm thinking that life is more of a boat-load of cherries. Or when it rains, it pours cherries all over my kitchen counter. I was bestowed with the blessing of like 5 pounds (!) of cherries last Sunday night from a fellow programmer at KYRS. I thought I would do something with them, you know, like something culinarily creative. But in the end, all that became of them were a pile of pits and stems, no pies, no tarts, no jams, no black forest cakes, no liqueurs. Just me chomping down on half a tree's worth.

My recent trip to Spokane's bountiful countryside seems to have inspired an onslaught of "Isn't that just perfectly lovely?"-type photos. I was walking home from Rosauers (to buy pectin to make a jam out of that flat of strawberries -- determined NOT to eat those one by one), and my only wish was that Nat King Cole was there to nuzzle up to me with a pretzel and a beer singing about rolling out "those lazy, hazy, crazy days of summer." My next pictures may be of pretzels and beer. That sounds really nice.

June 24

Good morning, neighborhood cafe. Until I have a front porch of my own on which to sit and stare at my neighbors, this is the next best thing.

June 1

Today marks the first day of the annual ArtFest in Coeur d'Alene Park, right in my own backyard. Well, not really, but just a block and 1/2 from my apartment. Tonight I watched as some hippies set up camp outside my building. They weren't doing anything, really. They just parked their Volvo, got out of the car with their dogs (not on leashes), cranked their music and just sat on the lawn. I don't think their intention was to actually go to ArtFest, but rather to gather near to the artisitic spirits surrounding them...on the lawn. They just left a few minutes ago. They must have gotten what they were looking for.

In the midst of tons of (cool) ceramics, silver jewelry, glassware, woodworking and painting, I found this tent most appealing. And since I will never be able to pay the $1,225 he's asking for, I thought I'd just take a picture to remember it by.

And the best part was that Becky and Kate came down to hang! Kate has an incredible tongue that stuck out like this for about half of the time. It kind of looked like a little strawberry.
Happy June!

...But it's comin' by dawn
We can feel it come
You can feel it in your heart
You can see it in the ground
You can see it in the trees
You can smell it in the breeze
Look around! Look around! Look around!

June is bustin' out all over!

May 22

It seems like for the past several years, the week following Whitworth's graduation weekend brings on some pretty amazing wind and rain storms, and often hail. I was in a hurry to walk home from the grocery store in case that ominous sky decided to suddenly dump all of its goods on to me and my groceries, but I thought this scene was rather stunning and had to stop for a sec.

May 17

Some of the sights on my walk home from work.

This is just one of the many empty bottles I saw lying around. But this was the most innocent, and it looked like it was actually ready to have its picture taken. "Bubble Up, Spokane!"
I thought the only meaning for the word "Fob" had to do with keyless entry. Apparently I had forgotten about the band Fall Out Boy. And someone in Browne's Addition is absolutely crazy about them.

This is what I have to put up with on these walks to my apartment. Sunshine, perfectly formed irises just hanging out by the sidewalk, and the overwhelmingly sweet smells of lilacs. I imagine when I am old, these are the kinds of details about my young life I will describe and exaggerate to the grandkids, but really, it's for real.
