Laura and I used to tell people, "We were friends before we were even born." Another variation was "We became friends when we were still in our moms' stomachs." But basically, yes. Laura was the first friend I ever had in the world. We shared families. We went to church, elementary and junior high school together. We put on summer pool shows. Laura made me cool. I even tried out for the girls' 6th grade basketball team because she did. She made the A team. I made the B team. Clearly I was never athletic, but we imagined that our boyfriends were NBA all-stars and that we were the world's highest jumpers whenever we jumped on her trampoline.
Sara was my first friend in high school. We had an acting class together, and we did a scene from a Shakespeare play (can't remember which) where my line began, "But say now, Lucetta..." I had a horrible haircut, but Sara was so kind and complimented me on it. When I saw her mom last weekend, she referred to me as one of Sara's "forever friends." I agree, because that's how I think of Sara, too. We were reliable and true to each other no matter what drama was going on around us during those awkward high school years.
Rarely have the three of us ever hung out together. I don't know if it has ever happened, just us three. This was indeed a special occasion.
