When I was younger and watched my Oma knit afghans, I thought it looked so hard that I didn't even bother to ask her how she did it. I just watched in amazement as she whipped that stuff out over a couple afternoons spent watching "As the World Turns."
My nieces don't quite take after me - after seeing me knit, they not only watched in amazement (not that I'm really good or anything), but they insisted that I show them how to do it. So this past fall I bought them some kids knitting needles and yarn, and then looked online for suggestions on how to teach young people how to knit. The world wide web had a good suggestion - teach them a rhyme.
Under the fence,
Gather the sheep,
Back we come,
Off we leap.
It seems to have worked. Their new hobby also benefits from their long attention spans.
